Inspiration is everywhere. As you may already have gathered by now, we borrow age-old and new-age philosophies from all walks of life — including mixed martial arts. Hi-ya Bruce!
Throughout this site, you'll find wise words that resonate with our experience in the art of play. Impro philosophers come in all shapes and sizes — from the Dalai Lama to the Dolly Parton — but no one has influenced our formative style more than Keith Johnstone.
"If people had no fear, you'd hardly need to have to teach them. It's the fear that screws everything up" — Keith Johnstone
Our improvisational approach is to dissipate the fears that ruin our talent and kill our stories in pursuit of fearless play, momentous acts and absolute scenes full of The Spirit of play.
The Art of play is interactive, so we practice an interplaying narrative method — initiating scenes from authentic perspectives, setting out with nuanced truths negotiating relationships
How we tell our stories, and how we stage our stories.

Did you know Keith is still teaching? As recently as in 2018, Darren Yorke had the opportunity to work with him for 8 Days in an Impro Masterclass at Theaterhaus Mitte, Berlin. Aged 85, Keith introduced himself saying ‘I still like teaching, because I never really found out how to do it.’
Keith Johnstone published a book called Impro in 1979, and another called Impro for Storytellers in 1999, both of which largely capture his improvisational theory and methodology. More recently, he's been collaborating on guidebooks for each of his show formats. Combined, they form the basis of our approach to teaching and staging Impro.
Learned in the abstract, Keith's show formats are highly entertaining — but it's not until you experience
"The Spirit" can only be learned by experience.

"In life, there are people who prefer to say 'yes', and there are people who prefer to say 'no'. Those who say 'yes' are rewarded by the adventures they have."
— Keith Johnstone

"It is the long history of humankind (and animal kind, too) that those who learned to collaborate and improvise most effectively have prevailed."
— Charles Darwin
